It’s an interesting hiccup to be sure, but from-scratch assets might actually end up being a benefit if they could be remade to look better than the originals. Though it may explain why Diablo is “going last” after StarCraft and Warcraft remasters being released already.

After all, this happened 20 years ago, a lot of it was able to be saved, and while yes, it would be a pain to remake all the assets with no backups to draw on, that seems reasonable for a few years work, if Blizzard has known they wanted to remaster Diablo 2 for a while. So while this may make a potential Diablo 2 remaster more difficult, I certainly don’t think it’s impossible for Vicarious Visions or another studio to do so. It would make it very difficult for Blizzard to do a Diablo II remaster because all the assets we used are pretty much gone. “We lost a lot of the assets, art assets. finally rebuilt a lot of it through what people had at their homes.” We were supposed to have a backup but neglected it. I really hope this does make it out for the holiday. So, I would lend some weight to this rumor, both because of the source, and because of common sense. No word on what the Stone of Jordan economy might be like when it returns. Given that you can still play original Diablo 2 now and get hopelessly addicted, I have to believe a proper remaster would have the same effect. We know the somewhat odd PvE expansion of Overwatch, called Overwatch 2 despite its questionable credentials as a true sequel, is on the way, but definitely not in time for this holiday.ĭiablo 4 is also on the distant horizon, and though we have seen a decent amount of footage from it, it is still likely to be a few years away, so this release would scratch that Diablo itch in the meantime.
